South Africa’s Pick n Pay launches MVNO service called PnP Mobile

The customers will be rewarded with 250 MB to 2.5 GB of data every month

South African company Pick n Pay rolls out a new MVNO service called PnP Mobile, media reports said. The company will use MTN’s mobile network for the service and will offer airtime and data services through SIM-based access only.

The launch will add PnP Mobile under Pick n Pay’s growing list of value-added and financial service offerings.

It is reported that the company will offer a tiered rewards system for Smart Shopper customers. The reward system will include free data to both mobile spend and shopping. The customers will be rewarded with 250 MB to 2.5 GB of data every month for mobile top-ups and in-store expenditure. The data rewards will be stored into the customer’s sim after every shopping.

The registration for the services will not involve any physical filling-in of forms. Customers will register for the new PnP SIM card through a system that uses a new paperless facility. The service is expected to be rolled out in 500 selected Pick n Pay stores by the end of the year.

Pick n Pay was established in 1967 and is the second-largest supermarket chain store in South Africa. Its business is widespread across other South African nations. It is reported that Boxer, which is controlled by Pick n Pay, will launch a sim card in the future.

The growing demand for mobile internet and connectivity in South African and parts of Africa has bolstered the ambitions of Pick n Pay to foray into the telecom segment.
