Saudi Telecom Company unveils region’s first autonomous 5G bus

Saudi Telecom Company (STC) has unveiled the region’s first 5G-powered autonomous-driving bus at the King Abdulaziz Telecommunication Complex in the national capital city of Riyadh.

Unveiled in partnership with Ericsson, the bus will facilitate the commuting process of the staff and guests within the telecom campus in a hassle-free manner.

This innovative feature that has been rolled out is new to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and also, to the whole of the Middle East region.

Nasser bin Sulaiman Al Nasser, the chief executive of STC said that the organisation will  carry on with its endeavour of digital revolution in accordance with the Saudi Vision 2030.

The company indicated that its main objective is to herald the digital revolution in the country by enabling the citizens to enjoy enhanced lifestyles through offering digital smart options, which also features the public transport industry.

According to analyst IDC, 5G is bound to boost the digital revolution journey in not only Saudi Arabia, but across the whole of the Gulf region.

This can be done through empowering a vast array of advanced software tools created around technologies such as the industrial internet of things (IIOT), artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality and virtual reality.

Recently, Al Khobar was declared as the first city in Saudi Arabia to test a 5G network. The nation has drafted a 5G taskforce panel to accelerate the technology, with the STC having rolled out a live 5G network in the Kingdom.
